As part of the Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294) Project, the existing pedestrian bridge that connects Western Springs and Hinsdale is being replaced. The Village, along with the Village of Western Springs, are working together to determine the location of the new bridge. The two proposed locations are: 1) at the existing location at Maple Street/Minneola Street and 2) north of 47th Street at Spring Rock Park and Veeck Park. In either location, the new bridge will meet pedestrian ADA accessibility standards. The Village is considering several factors when determining the replacement bridge location including impacts to adjacent property owners, use of the proposed bridge by Hinsdale residents and community goals.

The Central Tri-State is being reconstructed from Balmoral Avenue to 95th Street to provide congestion relief, reconstruct old infrastructure to meet current and future transportation demand and address regional needs.

The Illinois Tollway is reconstructing the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway Bridge, which carries the triple-track railroad over the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) between Hinsdale and Western Springs, to accommodate the widening of the Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294).  In 2019, the Tollway will begin work to construct a bypass bridge that will allow for uninterrupted freight and commuter rail operations during bridge reconstruction.  Once the bypass bridge is complete, the main bridge will be rebuilt and lengthened. Work on the BNSF Railway Bridge is scheduled to continue through 2022.

Fiber work on the 4428 BNSF project will begin the week of 9/23 and is expected to be completed in four weeks. The Village of Hinsdale will experience the following impact:

  • Work will include tree removal, three reel trucks with trailers, vac trailer, small excavator and water trailer to be staged in the site access point near Pitchin Kitchen.
  • Up to four trucks and trailers will be parked along the south curb line of Walnut Avenue.
  • Contractor will provide appropriate tree protection measures and site restoration will take place at the conclusion of the project.
  • Tree clearing scheduled to begin next week.
  • Work will be done during daytime hours.
