The
Hinsdale Police Department is introducing an innovative
traffic-calming initiative to help stop speeding in residential
areas, the Pace Car Program. This program is modeled after
similar programs that have been successful in municipalities
nationwide.

The
concept of the Pace Car Program is simple, and its success
relies upon the support and participation of the community.
Individuals pledge to drive courteously and obey the speed
limit on local roadways. Collectively, as participation
in the program increases, the change to safer driving behavior
should be evident.
Residents
who pledge to drive responsibly and drive the speed limit
will receive a free bumper sticker or window decal that
designates the driver as a Pace Car Program participant.
By displaying the decal, they encourage other drivers to
do the same. As these residents drive the speed limit, they
set the pace for other drivers following behind them.
This
program serves as a powerful traffic-calming alternative
used to encourage motorists in the Hinsdale Community to
slow down, resulting in safer roadways for children, pedestrians,
and other motorists.
To
participate in the Pace Car Program, residents should sign
the pledge at the bottom of this form and send it to the
Hinsdale Police Department at the address indicated. Participants
may also register online at: www.villageofhinsdale.org/pacecar.
Participants will receive the requested decal by mail and
should display the bumper sticker or window decal on their
vehicle. The stickers and window clings are easily removable
and can be reapplied multiple times.
The
challenge for participants will be to incorporate the pledge
into daily driving habits and "set the pace" for
others. Following these rules of the road will demonstrate
safe driving behavior:
- Be
aware of your speed and observe the speed limit
- Always
yield to pedestrians crossing the street
- Come
to a complete stop at stop signs, then look carefully
before proceeding
- Do
not tailgate
- Slow
down near schools when children are present
- Do
not block walkways, a bike lane, or a driveway when parking
- Share
the road with pedestrians and bicyclists
