- "Police Magistrate" position was created
when the village was incorporated. Issaac L. Hinds,
tin merchant and postmaster, received the job. He served
as arresting officer and judge.

- C.P. Clark is hired as Constable (police officer).
Horse stealing and tramps lead to his hiring.

- Six Kerosene street lamps installed on Washington
Street, police officers light and fill street light

11, 1882 - Unsolved Murder of "Lake Ransom"
(person) at 1st and Lincoln Street
- 1902
- John W. Nicholson (Born - December 7th,1863, Died
- March 29,1931) promoted to "Chief" of Hinsdale
Police Department. Nicholson serves 38 years with the
HPD.

- Police patrol on foot, bicycle, or personal horse
and buggy.
- 1905
- Department receives a Village-owned auto for patrol.

- Police Department has it's own squad car and two motorcycles.
- 1930's
- Hinsdale Police Officer Paul Sweger killed in the
line of duty. Sweger was chasing an offender on motorcycle,
struck and killed by an car backing out of a driveway

Unemployed transients allowed to sleep in the Police
Department basement for one night
- 1931
- Two squad cars and two motorcycles purchased. Two
Harley - Davidson (twin cylinder motorcycles capable
of 90mph).

Today
the Hinsdale Police Department is one of only 500 internationally
accredited police departments in the world. The police department
is currently staffed with 28 full time police officers and
12 full time civilian personnel. The department serves a
population of 18,000 residents in both DuPage and Cook Counties.
