514 South Garfield Street - Private
Residence

514 South Garfield Street-Private Residence
This
house is a two story brick, stone and stucco single-family
residence that was constructed in 1928 in the Tudor Revival
style. Village Trustees designated the structure as an historic
landmark on October 1, 2002. An addition was constructed
in 1970 at the rear of the structure. The building was designed
by local architect R. Harold Zook. This house represents
an early stage in the evolution of Zook's highly personal
style.
Mr.
Zook designed approximately 34 single-family residences
in the Village while he resided at 327 South Oak Street.
Mr. Zook was involved in the Memorial Hall building committee
that reviewed and awarded the contract for construction
of the building in 1927, and he contributed to various other
early planning efforts in the Village.
The
house is located on Garfield Street, a major north south
through street that is adjacent to the town center. The
building is in keeping with the Tudor Revival designs of
R. Harold Zook. Brick and stone work and half-timbering
are found on the exterior. The building has a steeply pitched
gable roof with projecting gables in front. The asymmetrical
front entry includes an arched door with a stone surround.
The door is made of heavy planks with decorative wrought
iron hardware.
This
house is a good example of both a style and an architect
that were very popular in Hinsdale during the 1920s and
1930s.
